A Story

We aren’t born leaders or born to be facilitators and learning how to facilitate can be hard and I can say overwhelming. I am part of an organization and we all have different opinions. I was vice-president for a while and trust me the president and I wanted everyone to be included and not leave anyone behind or out. This can be very difficult. Sometimes we had members that would be very rude about ideas or who would be split, we had to figure out how to reinforce the teamwork and it became even more difficult when we had to build upon ideas. Although you want to hear everyone and include everyone’s ideas it is hard, you don’t want to make a person feel left out or become split yourself and eventually take sides.

It is hard at the moment you don’t want to be wrong or make people feel like you didn’t hear their thoughts or decisions so what we eventually did was take votes on what people wanted which is not the solution at all.  I have seen in many group situations this is big and the only thing it does is make people take sides.

In LEAD400 we read about how facilitators should take actions in group settings. I think as facilitators we can develop innovative ideas that take everyone’s interests into account, listen for common ground, and overall paraphrasing. I believe that these three things are a way to come up with a plan together that includes everyone and sometimes listening to it in another way might help to understand and a way to facilitate better. After reading examples and more about facilitators I can now say that if I was Vice president again I will definitely know how to create a better group environment and have a very inclusive environment for ideas and solutions.
