                                  LEAD100: Becoming a Leader

This course introduced us to cultural and ethical dimensions of leadership and its application to many social issues of our time and provided us with knowledge of leadership.

This course made me think about who could be a leader and what types/philosophies of leadership there are. I believe this is where I really started to see how the great man theory doesn't always apply in leadership. I realized through this class what type of leader I wanted to be and how we can all become great leaders and that you don’t have to be born a leader to become one, it’s a process of learning and practicing.

LEAD 2410:Dynamics of Privilege and Oppression and Empowerment in Leadership

LEAD 2410 made us examine the theoretical framework of social identity development, individual, group, cultural, and institutional power dynamics, and the resulting inequalities formed by systems of privilege and oppression.

During this course, we saw many videos and definitely saw how society has been shaped by power and privilege for the longest time. This course is definitely where I felt anger, where I sought to be a good leader to be a better leader. I saw how Privilege, Power, and oppression can be factors to why many of us don’t speak up and say what we think. This course gave us the opportunity to analyze how this system has pushed many minorities from being leaders and essentially for many making it hard to become leaders.

INVS 3100:Multicultural Leadership: Theories, Principles, and Practices

The course focused on leadership theories and skills necessary for effective leadership in multicultural settings. We gained an understanding of traditional and culturally diverse approaches to leadership.

This course is where I remember applying leadership theories to real-life situations and cases/issues happening in society. I remember that I wanted to apply many theories to these problems we were assigned, yet we had to shape our theories with the rest of our team members' theories. We found out that once we all had the same vision on how to solve a particular problem we ended up having a better presentation and better view of what we wanted to accomplish. As leaders, we have to see what theory best works and analyze how the setting we are in is going to affect it but it is possible to continue with that theory you just have to make it work and show that your theory can be successful.

LEAD 4000: Leadership in Context and Emerging Challenges: A Capstone

Integrates leadership topics and experiences students pursued through the Leadership Studies Minor. Using advanced critical thinking skills, the seminar requires students to evidence their knowledge, competencies, and skills related to leadership theory and practice through examining contemporary leadership challenges. Further, the seminar directs students to justify decision-making processes, demonstrating their ability to synthesize prior knowledge to affect desirable, ethical outcomes.

I believe that this capstone course is going to be a good way to close this leadership minor. We are about a month in with this course and I love it because I think that we are now really putting to practice what we have learned, we have been thinking thoroughly about what leader we want to be and how to get to that place we want. I’m very excited about the way the class is going. I can’t wait to explore, analyze, and practice more of the steps to become a leader.
