I took AVID as a class for 4 years in high school. I believe AVID for me had a big impact on who I am today and who I still want to become. AVID showed me and pushed me to come out of my comfort zone. I realized that AVID was a lot about working in teams, presenting during class and overall doing a lot of community service outside of school. I remember that working in groups wasn't the best for me. I always closed myself to doing things and never spoke at all and when it came to presenting in class I avoided eye contact with everyone, I was really not the best at it. I remember each Thursday we had to facilitate group activities and that was even harder than speaking. I felt like all the pressure was on me when it was my turn. All of this changed and I look back and I can see why we did all of this. It was preparing us to go into college and life.

Our school had AVID graduates with distinction and I graduated with that, that meant I had much more than the hours we actually needed for community service and I excelled as an AVID student who showed leadership and teamwork. It makes me proud to see where I am right looking back to how I was at the beginning of freshman year in high school until the last day and until today. I can say throughout the years I’ve been learning what being a leader means and the importance of working with others in a team. On graduation day I spoke thanks to my avid graduate with distinction iand I am proud to be a leader for my Latinx community because I got to represent my Latinx community.

I Have a Dream Tutor                                              2019

This became the most important position in my life. I was a tutor for 3rd graders and I helped them with activities, homework and in general, I was someone whom they could trust and talk to. My classroom had only students of color like me,  who had big dreams and aspirations. Many who always said, “I want to be like you help others and go to college just like you are about to”. Those words stuck with me and will be stuck with me forever because at this moment in my life I realized we could be role models and leaders for the people we least expect. Helping these kids was an amazing opportunity, I learned how to interact with them and how to be a support system for them. It was hard to work with 3rd graders because they all had different interests and many had different wants and needs, but I had to learn how to help them all and although that was a challenge I was able to do it. I felt that helping these students and being their support system made me realize that more than ever I wanted to be a good leader. It pushes me to learn more about leadership and I know that by doing work like this through the leadership minor I am going to be able to do more work like this and motivate kids who look like me who are minorities like me. Show that we can all reach our dreams.

Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County

This club is almost like our Boulder High Z-Club except for people who are not in high school anymore. Through this organization, I have learned a lot and I have to say that it isn’t at all what I thought it would be. This club includes members who are in college, who have finished college with associates,  their masters,  and doctorate degrees. I thought that this club would be very rigid and would keep a very serious organization/work environment. When I joined my thoughts were that we were about to have more busywork than the one we had in our high school club and that there was no space for team bonding activities like the ones we used to have. Yes, we do a lot of work for the community and we come up with plans just as any other organization. I can say though that I’m starting to realize that we have many leadership theories applied during our meetings and that we have this space where we can all share our thoughts and ideas, where we are all heard, and that's amazing because I started to realize the meaning of organizations/clubs is to be able to work together to come up with the correct vision and solution. I have realized too that breaks during meetings are good and it's a good way to take a breath especially when the group is feeling overwhelmed.

(This picture is part of our group through zoom meetings playing a game after feeling overwhelmed over a discussion we had.)
